Speaker's Profile
Dr Bong Fwee Leong was born in Penang, Malaysia. He received his professional degree qualification from the Engineering Council, London, UK., and the M.Eng. degree in telecommunications from the Multimedia University of Malaysia. He continued to do PhD in Engineering with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman on a part-time basis, graduating in 2017. Due to his passion for scientific research, he continues to work hard on novel miniaturization techniques in the design of passive UHF RFID tag antennas. His research results have been published in high impact scholarly/tier 1 international journals. He has also coauthored numerous other technical papers in international journals. Apart from this, he also serves as a volunteer peer reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, International Journal of Antennas and propagation and IET Electronics Letters. Dr. Bong has also successfully obtained Charted Engineer (UK) title in Jan 2020.

Dr. Bong started his career at Inventec Sdn. Bhd. in 1995 and then joined Agilent Technologies from 1997 to 2008. After that, he attached to Escatec Electronics Sdn. Bhd. for two years. During this time, he involved in the design, development, test and characterizations of RF low noise amplifier ICs and IC’s demonstration boards, as well as hand-on experiences in machine maintenance and electronic testing. In 2010, Dr Bong moved on to Smartrac Technology Malaysia, which is a major market player in manufacturing passive RFID transponders. He accumulated around 10 years of experience in test, research, and design for both HF and UHF RFID tag antennas as a senior test engineer climbing his way up to Senior RF designer and then promoted to Lead of designer. He was a pioneer RFID tag antennas researcher in Smartrac Malaysia. Within this period of time, Dr. Bong together with his technical team have successfully designed and released more than 40 new RFID tags to the commercial market. He was also the first to introduce the world’s thinnest UHF tag antenna for difficult surfaces and the smallest inlay that meeting the stringent performance criteria for retail market in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Because of his passion for knowledge sharing, He had decided to enter the teaching profession and worked as a senior lecturer at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Penang for 2 years. He continued to be involved in RFID technology research.

After leaving university at the end of 2021, he joined HID Global Malaysia as an RFID consultant, responsible for providing technical training, assisting the technical team to further improve their technical capabilities and solve product-related technical problems. He was subsequently offered the permanent position of Training and Metrology Manager with almost the same scope of work and the Metrology department is attached to him.
