Tiao Corporation wants to build a monstrous six-story market-rate housing complex on Cesar Chavez Avenue and Chicago Street in the neighborhood of Boyle Heights. In January 2023, they released the plans for the building. Disgustingly, this building will
only have five (5) affordable units and 45 market-rate units, which is a slap in the face to our community whose working-class residents have been historically marginalized and fighting against displacement, gentrification and unemployment, issues that have been compounded by COVID-19.
The current tenants, commercial and residential (in rent-control units) are against this development as their livelihoods will be under threat. This will affect a family of four generations who live here, including an 83-year-old tenant who has lived there for 30 years and whose family own the restaurant/bar El Apetito on the corner for the past 14 years, Finessa beauty salon owned by a queer femme for 30 years, Re/arte Centro Literario, a Chicana-owned bookstore and cultural center (2.5 years), a vintage store, and a MetroPCS.
Get involved in the fight against gentrification and stop Tiao Corporation from invading Boyle Heights by spreading the word and signing the petition!

Tiao Corporation quiere construir un monstruoso complejo de viviendas de 6 pisos en Cesar Chavez Avenue y Chicago Street en nuestro vecindario. En enero de 2023, dieron a conocer los planos del edificio. Desafortunadamente, este edificio solo tendrá tres (3) unidades asequibles y 45 unidades a precio de mercado, lo cual es una burla para nuestra comunidad cuyos residentes de clase trabajadora han sido históricamente marginados y luchan contra el desplazamiento, la gentrificación y el desempleo, problemas que se han visto agravados por el COVID-19.
Los inquilinos actuales, comerciales y residenciales (en unidades de control de rentas) están en contra de este desarrollo ya que sus medios de subsistencia se verán amenazados. Esto afectará a una familia de cinco generaciones que vive aquí y es propietaria del restaurante/bar El Apetito en la esquina durante los últimos 35 años, el salón de belleza Finesse propiedad de una mujer queer durante 29 años, Re/arte Centro Literario, propiedad de una librería y centro cultural chicana que vive en Boyle Heights, y QVO Laboratories, una tienda vintage propiedad de un Chicano que tambien vive en la vecindad.

We are asking that everyone show up and give public comment at the Public Hearing with City Planning at the Ramona Hall Community Center on Wednesday, November 8th at 4:30PM!

On August 31st, City Planning Commission drafted a Letter of Determination in approval of the Tiao Development, citing a CEQ exemption (Environmental impact). The community was given until the 15th of September to file an appeal. Viva Padilla, owner of Re/Arte, filed an appeal on behalf of the tenants on September 15, Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council, and community members.
On June 30, Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council held a special meeting about this development. Residents of the community showed up and spoke out against TIAO Corporation whose representative gave a presentation at the meeting. The Council unanimously voted NO on the development and drafted a letter of opposition to be sent to PLUM, the Planning Dept. and LA City Council. This is an important first step in stopping the development. Next step is to take it to the organizations named above.
