Seattle School Board and Superintendent Juneau: End Seattle Schools Relationship with Seattle Police Department
We are parents, students, educators and community members who are horrified by the behavior of the Seattle Police Department in the face of the May 29-31 weekend of protests turned violent by police aggression that included pepper-spraying a child. The Seattle Police Department has shown itself to be untrustworthy and the continued presence of Seattle police officers will add to the racial trauma our students of color experience on a daily basis. We are concerned about our district supporting the school-to-prison pipeline and police violence against our black and brown students through our contract with the Seattle Police Department to place “School Emphasis Officers” in our central and south end schools. Given the district's strategic plan's goal to "unapologetically address the needs of students of color who are furthest from educational justice, and work to undo the legacies of racism in our educational system..." there is no place for the Seattle Police Department in our schools. In response to the killing of George Floyd, the director of the Minneapolis Public School Board recently announced that he is submitting a proposal to terminate the school district’s contract with the Minneapolis Police Department. After this weekend’s police violence against protestors, Seattle Public Schools should follow in the footsteps of Minneapolis and end our contract with the Seattle Police Department.
