The TILA project was supported by the European Lifelong Learning Programme from Jan 2013 until July 2015 [http://www.tilaproject.eu]. It aims to enhance intercultural communication and foreign language learning among pupils from different European countries and cultures through telecollaboration. Pedagogic focus is on facilitating authentic communication practice and on helping pupils to become aware of the communication problems they encounter and to work out strategic solutions.
Pupils meet in pairs or small groups in either a tandem or lingua franca format. In a tandem format, the pupils’ respective foreign language is their communication partners’ native language. In a lingua franca format, all pupils share the same foreign language.
Telecollaboration tools include videoconferencing and 3D virtual worlds for synchronous oral communication, text chat for synchronous written communication as well as forum, blog or wiki for asynchronous written communication. Moodle is used to facilitate pedagogic organization in blended learning ensembles – from classroom to homework, from face-to-face to online – as preferred and required.
Collaboration within the TILA Network will continue beyond the end of the funding period. You can join the TILA Network either as an individual or as an institution.
