Downtown Art Community Engaged Art Commissions & Residencies Application
Downtown Art is pleased to announce our 2019 Community Engaged Art Commissions & Residencies open to NYC based artists and project teams. Our purpose is to support artists with a practice of civic engagement addressing social justice issues.

Artists may request

A) Commissions: $1000 commissioning fee for a community-based project in any discipline in NYC
or
B) Commissions + Theater Residency: $500 commissioning fee plus 10 day residency in the Downtown Art theater for rehearsal and performance

APPLICATION DEADLINE: TUESDAY, January 22, 2019 midnight.

We are interested in proposals
- Demonstrating a creativity of response to and engagement with a community on an issue of social significance
- Reflecting experience with civic and/or community engagement
- Grounded in authentic connection to community impacted by issue

Examples of issues of social significance include, but are not limited to, immigration, climate change, racial and gender equity, criminal justice reform, voting rights, housing and anti-displacement.

Proposals in all artistic disciplines are eligible.
All commissions should include a public presentation or share at Downtown Art.
All projects should include plans for documentation

All public events must take place by June 30, 2019.

FOR PROPOSALS THAT INCLUDE A RESIDENCY IN OUR THEATER
Each residency includes ten days in our black box theater for rehearsal, tech, and public presentations, a $500 fee and 50% of any box office receipts.

Theater Residency time frames are: 1) April 18 - 27 2) May 16 - 25 3) June 21 - 30

Included
- Residency hours in Downtown Art's first floor black box theater (74 max. occupancy), evenings after 6pm and all day/evening on weekends.
- Use of theatrical lighting (rep plot), sound, video projectors, and soft goods;
- Four hour load in and load out with DTA Technical Director,
- Marketing support via eblast and social media for any public performances,
- Online ticketing service and box office/house manager at each public performance.
- A commissioning fee of $1000 plus 50% of box office proceeds for any public performance. Individual ticket price will be set at $20 or less.
- Access to DTA staff for brainstorming and support
(Please note that due to renovations during spring 2019, Downtown Art cannot offer dressing room or storage space outside the theater itself; all projects should be conceived so that they can work within the black box theater and adjoining lobby.)

Equipment: ETC Ion 1000 Console w fader wing; 48 dimmers; 42 ETC Source 4 instruments; 10 Source 4 LED Series 2 Lustr; 13 ETC Selador D40 Lustr LED (PAR shaped washlights); 5 Colorado Colorbatten 72 cyc lights; 1 Carvin 24 channel mixer, 2 QSC K8 1000 watt powered speakers; Mitsubishi DLP projector, Apple mini mac w QLab 3 Pro

Artist will need to provide all artistic and production staff, including running crew; rights to use any copyrighted material, timely information for marketing support.
