Reflecting on our Pandemic Experience
The Arlington Commission for Arts & Culture (ACAC) has invited Arlington artist/designer Nilou Moochhala to join us as Artist-in-Residence this Spring with a project exploring the COVID-19 Pandemic. Moochhala developed this questionnaire to collect the diverse stories and experiences of people who live, work, go to school, or are otherwise part of the Arlington community. We hope to hear from you – please share your stories and perspective. Consider these questions as prompts for composing your unique “Letter from the Pandemic.”  You don’t have to answer them all, and the final question is open for any additional thoughts.

Your shared memories and insights will help inspire abstract drawings for a meditative space the artist will create this summer in the pine forest of Menotomy Rocks Park. In addition (with your permission) your response will be added to Robbins Library’s COVID Archive and preserved for future generations wishing to understand this life-changing time. We have been making history; now, we invite you to reflect on and record that history in your own authentic voice.

Please help us build this collection of stories by forwarding the link to this questionnaire to others.

What was your initial reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown on March 13, 2020? Please use 1-3 specific words that capture your feelings and emotions during those first few weeks, or write a brief sentence.
One year in, how has your personal life and/or living situation been impacted or evolved as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions? Please describe any changes.
How has the lockdown, social distancing, and economic shifts affected your working life over these past 12 months? Do you work at home remotely, on the "front lines" or in the community, or has your work been interrupted? Have you had to change direction, learn new skills or otherwise evolve in response to the pandemic?
With so many of our movements restricted, were you able to create a sense of normalcy? If so how? With so many overlapping roles of worker, parent, caregiver, etc - how have you managed to navigate the 'new normal'?
The inability to travel was a hardship for many, either because of missing distant family and friends or not being able to spend time in special places. If this was an issue for you, can you share a story?
Have you been able to 'breathe' during the pandemic? Please share how you have or have not been able to.
If you have children living at home, can you describe the impact of lockdown and remote/hybrid education on them and on your family?
If you live with or care for an elderly relative, how has this been impacted by the pandemic?
Have you, or anyone you are close to, tested positive or been sick with COVID-19? Have you lost someone to the virus? Please share what this/these experience(s) was like.
What have you found most stressful or difficult about the pandemic, and have you developed any new strategies or practices to handle these conditions? What – or who – has gotten you through?
Is there a positive memory/memories you can take away from this very challenging year?
Is there anything you want to add – a story, observation, or comment on something we haven't covered?
