As Californians, we know that our future depends on young people having the opportunity to earn a higher education.
But California's leaders have put special interests ahead of students. Between 1980-2014, our state cut UC and CSU student funding by 55% and 43%. In March, CSU's Board of Trustees voted to raise tuition by another 5%. These tuition hikes and budget cuts add up to billions of public dollars being taken away from young people striving to earn a higher education and a better life.
As a result, California ranks 47th out of 50 states in our share of high school graduates enrolling in 4-year colleges. When students persist and graduate college, they enter the workforce with over $20,000 in debt on average.
It is time to stop taxing students with tuition and start taxing big corporations instead. Out of concern for our future, we call on the leaders of our state to:
1) Eliminate tuition and fees at all of California's public community colleges, California State Universities, and University of California campuses for any student with a family income of $150,000 or less.
2) Expand financial aid to cover the additional costs of college, especially for students who are struggling to afford it.
3) Sustain these investments over the long haul, and ensure that every student--regardless of their background or immigration status--has the opportunity to earn a higher education.
These common sense investments would lead to a brighter future for every Californian. If officials and legislators continue to cut investments in higher education or raise tuition and fees, we will bring our proposal directly to California voters on the 2018 ballot.
