HPS is divided into multiple subteams that focus on certain aspects of the submarine. Here are brief descriptions of our current subteams:
Drivetrain - The Drivetrain subteam designs the propulsion mechanism of the submarine. They efficiently convert the pilot’s pedaling motion to power a propellor or a non-propellor system (like a fish tail, for instance), developing both computer-aided design and machining skills.
Hull - The Hull subteam designs, simulates and manufactures the outer shell of the submarine, balancing hydrodynamics, speed, and maneuverability. They make use of computer-aided modeling software as well as get their hands dirty when laying up, curing, and sanding the hull.
Human Submarine Interface (HSI) - The HSI subteam designs and manufactures anything that has to do with the pilot’s interaction with the submarine. This includes controls, steering mechanisms, and fail-safes for the pilot.
Electronics - The Electronics subteam creates and programs experimental devices to enhance the submarine, developing projects like electronic steering, buoyancy control, and sensor displays for the pilot. They use C++ and Arduinos to control servos and other electronic components.
Web Development - Web Development subteam designs, develops, and manages our website, chronicling our journey and student membership.
Publicity - The Publicity subteam coordinates recruitment, social events, general body meetings (GBMs), and community outreach (collaborations with other UCSD orgs and external organizations). They manage our social media platforms, promote our team
Finance - The Finance subteam manages the team's financial accounts, coordinates fundraising events, and procures sponsorships and mentors.
Dive - The Dive subteam coordinates all dive-related activities such as pool tests, scuba certifications for our members, and competition safety checks and runs, elaborating and ensuring safety protocols throughout.
