You are invited to nominate a dataset that highights the impact of Earth, space, and environmental data using the dimensions of people, planet, and prosperity. Submitters may also be invited to submit a manuscript to an AGU special collection highlighting impactful datasets.
You can nominate more than one dataset. Please submit additional datasets on separate forms.
Background
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is celebrating and highlighting the many impactful datasets that support the broad spectrum of research, analysis, and decision making by our community. At this moment especially, the creation, stewardship, and use of these impactful datasets should be broadly recognized.
You are invited to nominate an impactful dataset most valuable to your work. We are not limiting the definition of data so feel free to interpret that based on your own needs. Optionally, we have launched a new special collection where you can submit a technical data paper to further highlight the dataset.
What does impactful mean?
An impactful dataset is not measured simply by usage or citation. Instead, we are interested in how the dataset is used to study and understand the impact of Earth, space, and environmental science on dimensions of people, planet, and prosperity. This includes research, policy making, analysis, activities around environmental disasters, and conservation - to name a few. These dimensions are described in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and further characterized in the recent Geosciences in Action report.
The dimensions of impact are intended to be broad. The description below interprets them for datasets and is intended to inspire.
- People Dimension - Positive impact on Individuals: education, training, disaster response and prediction
- Planet Dimension - Positive impact on physical systems: geophysical phenomena, conservation, climate, environmental indicators
- Prosperity Dimension - Positive impact on socioeconomic systems: economic good, social equity, humanitarian relief, community resilience
What information is requested in the form?
- Nominator(s) Information: Name, email, ORCID, Affiliation/Organization
- Dataset information: Name, authors/creators, Link/Location (Persistent Identifier or URL), Repository Name where dataset is hosted, Repository Persistent Identifier, Repository data managers / curators / group-name that support the dataset (optional)
- Short description of the dataset being nominated. Target about 1500 characters. Could be copied from the dataset website. If copied, please provide the URL for reference.
- Personal story. Why is the nominated dataset impactful in your own words or in your opinion, in no more than 3000 characters. One aspect to consider is what couldn’t we do, know, or study if the dataset wasn’t available? Please use the dimensions of impact as a guide.
- Short description of how you interact with this dataset. No more than 1500 characters. This is intended to be your personal experience.
- Reference publication that describes the dataset. Optional
- Examples of how this dataset has been reused, any bibliographies listing instances of reuse, or any references to derived data products/datasets. Optional
How do I know if my dataset fits the criteria?
Each nomination will be reviewed for completeness and alignment with the objectives. If there are any questions, we will be in contact with the submitter. If the nomination is not a dataset in the broadest of terms, and after discussion with the submitter with the intent of resolving any concern, then the submission will not be included.
Newly submitted datasets will be added to our ongoing list, preserved in Zenodo.
Are there any restrictions on what datasets can be nominated?
You may nominate any dataset you use for your research, analysis, or decision making. This can be a dataset you and your team created, a dataset managed by a national entity, or created by others.
We ask that it be openly available, or at least if it is protected, the metadata is openly available.
If the dataset is at risk for being decommissioned/deleted, please make a note of that and we will be in contact.
If the dataset has already been decommissioned/deleted, you can identify an alternate location where it can be accessed. If you have any concerns about this, please make a note in the form, and we will be in contact.
What if two or more nominations are received for the same dataset?
Wonderful! The nomination form provides each submitter an opportunity to tell their personal story about why the dataset is impactful to them. We are delighted to include all stories on the same dataset.
