Step into the vibrant world of Korean music with Sangjaru, a captivating folk fusion band that merges the spirit of traditional minyo with the infectious rhythms of gypsy swing, funk, rock, and improvisation. Named after the Korean words sangja (box) and jaru (sack), Sangjaru blends the stability of tradition with the adaptability of innovation, creating a deterritorialized flow of dazzling new cultural expressions. Winner of the 2019 Sori Frontier competition at the Jeonju International Sori Festival, Sangjaru is recognized as one of Korea’s most exciting and inventive emerging bands.
This special event features a collaborative performance with Professor Michael Gould of the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the Residential College. Dr. Gould is internationally acclaimed for his work in contemporary percussion and drumset performance, and his collaborations span music, dance, visual art, and science.
