Murray's Secondary Math 1 Class Disclosure 2022-2023
Welcome to Secondary Math 1. I’m looking forward to a great year as we work together to develop important math skills. We will be doing quite a bit of discovery learning and problem solving to deepen understanding of mathematical concepts.

The Utah Secondary Math 1 standards that we will cover this year can be found at https://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=5600.

The most important rule for school is to show RESPECT to the teacher, other students, and yourself. The school rules are listed in the student folder received at registration, but here are a few to keep in mind:
     * Be on time and in your seat with your materials, ready to work
     * Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself. If it’s not yours don’t touch it.
     * Follow instructions and be positive with adults and students in the room.
     * Stay seated during instruction.
     * Do your own work and turn it in on time.
     * Backpacks and other items need to be tucked under your desk so they are not a tripping hazard.
     * Water is the only drink allowed in my class. Keep all other beverages/snacks in your backpack.
     * Have safe interactions with others (No horseplay, hitting, throwing stuff, etc.)
     * Cell phones/earbuds/airpods distract from learning and need to be put away during instructional time.

SUPPLIES:

For this class you will need:
     * Notebook/binder with paper for notes and paper to show your work on.
     * Pencils (sharpen before bell rings)
     * Optional: scientific/graphing calculator (we will be using desmos in class which is an online calculator)
     * Chromebook: We will be using the online textbook, ALEKS and completing assignments through Canvas

CITIZENSHIP GRADES:

Four tardies = N
Five tardies = U
A drop in citizenship due to tardiness will not be reversed for any reason.

A drop in citizenship due to any of the following may be reversed as a student improves behavior.
          * Repeatedly causing classroom disruptions, breaking class or school rules
          * Use of cell phone or earbuds

Cheating (copying work, plagiarizing work, or aiding others in cheating) will receive a U in citizenship and an F on the assignment.

ACADEMIC GRADES:

Grading Scale:
A = 93%-100%
A- = 90%-92%
B+ = 86%-89%
B = 83%-85%
B- = 80%-82%
C+ = 76%-79%
C = 73%-75%
C- = 70%-72%
D+ = 66%-69%
D = 63%-65%
D- = 60%-62%
F = Below 60%

CHEATING POLICY:

Cheating on tests and quizzes is defined as viewing another student’s work, talking during a test period, helping another student on an exam, using unauthorized reference materials (cell phones or watches), or using unauthorized programs on your graphing calculator/chromebook.

Cheating on homework is defined as copying another student’s work, turning in another student’s work, or giving your paper to another student. This includes the use of online programs or apps to get the answers to homework questions.

Students caught cheating will not receive credit for the activity in question.

***ASSIGNMENTS/NOTES/PROJECTS:

Math is a subject that requires practice to reinforce concepts. Therefore, homework/assignments will be given frequently. Class time will be given for students to work on assignments as time allows.

Each assignment is designed to teach specific essential skills or concepts; these skills build on each other.  The assignment exists to practice/master the skills, not just to earn points, so it is important to keep up on assignments as we go.

Most assignments will be submitted through Canvas.

Homework will be graded based on completion and accuracy of work. To get full credit for the assignment you will need to complete the entire assignment and turn it in on time.

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of class to answer questions you have on the assignment from the previous day.

Assignments that are turned in on time may be redone for a higher score.

Students who are absent when an assignment is given are responsible to find out what the assignment is. Assignments are posted on Canvas and the whiteboard calendar in our classroom.

***LATE WORK:
      * Work that is turned in more than 3 days after the due date will receive a drop of 20%.
      * Work due before midterms will only be worth half credit after the midterm cut off date set by the teacher.
      * Late work will be graded and entered into the portal as soon as possible. Assignments turned in on time             are given priority.
      * No late work will be accepted the last week of the quarter to allow me time to enter grades.
      * Late assignments may not be redone for a higher score.

***QUIZZES
      * Periodically we will have quizzes covering the material we have learned. These quizzes will be completed on Canvas and ALEKS. You will be given the opportunity to retake each quiz if needed.  Retakes on quizzes should be completed within one week.

***WARMUPS AND EXTRA POINTS
          *   You will be given time at the the beginning of class each day to work on a warmup topic in preparation for the class activities for the day.  Warmups are to be completed on paper and turned in on each Friday for a grade.
     *   You may do extra ALEKS topics for extra points if all other assignments are completed (maximum of 2 per cent per quarter towards your grade).

***TESTS:
     * Tests may be retaken for a higher score.  It is a good idea to come get help before you attempt to retake the test. Retakes may be done before/after school or during advisory time.

***EXTRA HELP
I understand that everyone comes to this class with unique experiences, interests and learning styles. My goal is to help you succeed in this class. I will be available before and after school most days for extra help. You can also come in during Advisory for extra help. If you are planning to come before or after school, please let me know in advance, so I can make sure that I am available for you.

***CANVAS
Please check your grade regularly on Canvas so you are aware of how you are doing in my class. I will be updating the grades at least weekly on Fridays.
