Storytelling as Resistance: An Evening With Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez

UNLV Comadres welcomes the UNLV community to join us on October 15, 2024, from 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art for an evening of inspiring narratives with acclaimed author Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez. This literary lecture, “Storytelling as Resistance,” will explore the transformative power of storytelling in challenging societal norms and fostering change.

The lecture will take place in the Barrick auditorium. After the talk, please join us for light refreshment in the beautiful lobby of the museum and enjoy the current exhibition, Contemporary Ex-votos: Devotion Beyond Medium. This exhibition centers traditional Mexican ex-votos (votive retablo paintings) and features art by contemporary Latinx artists from the United States and Mexico. There will also be a cash-only bar available after the lecture with sodas, a non-alcoholic apple cider mocktail, water, as well as wine and beer options for attendees 21-years or older.

Event Highlights:

  • Keynote Lecture: Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez will delve into how storytelling serves as a form of resistance, illuminating the ways in which personal and collective narratives challenge dominant structures and empower marginalized voices.

  • Q&A Session: Engage directly with Rodríguez during an interactive Q&A, where you can ask questions about her work, writing process, and the broader implications of storytelling as a tool for resistance and change.

  • Book Signing: Following the lecture, take the opportunity to have your copy of her book, Tías and Primas, signed by the author. If you do not have a book, one will be available for purchase.

This evening promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of how narrative can challenge and reshape the world. Space is limited, so please RSVP through the form below by October 11, 2024. Whether you’re a literary enthusiast or someone interested in the power of storytelling, this event is not to be missed. For additional questions about this event, please email gradrebel@unlv.edu
