Who we are
“DNS” is an abbreviation for “Det Nødvendige Seminarium” which is Danish for “The Necessary Teacher Training College”. This ambitious name reflects the fundamental idea around which our school is shaped. It is necessary to train progressive personalities who are able to understand and respond to the many challenges of our times. This was needed when the college was founded in 1972, and is no less needed today.
Throughout the duration of the programme, students and teachers study, travel, work, do sports, cook and share life together. For this reason, DNS can be described as an intentional community with an educational twist.
DNS primarily offers a four-year teacher training programme, however we also offer a number of summer camps, volunteering opportunities and short professional trainings throughout the year. All of these offer not just a programme but also a chance to experience life in an education-focussed community.
Professional Development Courses
Our Course Centre offers a series of intensive five-day courses for teachers, youth workers, and educators who are focused on empowering young people.
Current courses include:
- Climate Action: 2nd - 8th November (A 5-day course, inclusive of arrival and departure days)
Teaching for Peace: 2nd - 6th of March in 2026 (A 5-day course, inclusive of arrival and departure days)
Community Changemakers: 10th - 18th of August in 2026 (A 7-day course, inclusive of arrival and departure days)

This
programme is designed for workers involved in education, teachers, social
workers or youth workers, those interested in these professions, seeking to
deepen their impact and actively contribute to positive change through their current
or future work. By participating, you will join a dedicated community of practitioners. Together, we will share inspiration and co-develop practical strategies for your schools and organisations. Our collective aim is to provide young people with the opportunity to collaborate, lead, and become active citizens equipped to create meaningful change.
