At Scotswood Garden we offer play and youth work opportunities for 3 age groups (in addition to our family sessions, Early Explorers and Art & Music Garden):
- Nature Rangers for ages 6-10 years old
- Adventure Rangers 10-13 years old
- Nightshade Rangers 13-18 years old
We limit numbers in each group to a maximum of 18, and we usually have more children who would like to attend than we can accommodate. Therefore we need to hold a waiting list for children who would like to join our groups.
We also prioritise the way that spaces are allocated, according to the needs and considerations that our funding prioritises:
1. Local area - Scotswood and Benwell Ward is identified as being in the 10% most deprived wards in England according to the Indices of Multiple Deprivation, and this is why many of our funders support our work.
Local children in our ward, neighbouring wards in the west end of Newcastle, and then wider Newcastle wards will be given priority in that order. We do not necessarily exclude families from outside Newcastle, but they would need to demonstrate an additional consideration that meets those listed below.
2. Referrals from partners and other services that support children with their additional needs, emotional well-being, or other considerations (eg. CAMHS, WERS, Social Workers, Arts Connect, Family Intervention Team, Looked after / in care children).
3. Siblings of children already attending, particularly those who have additional needs or special circumstances within the family, as above.
4. Children who are Home Schooled.
We will consider the range and combination of these factors for each child, so simply living the closest does not automatically put you at the top of the priority list.
The minimum age for entry has been raised from 5 to the term in which a child turns 6, as we have found that younger children find it harder to settle and do not so successfully make the transition.
Children who do not attend for more than 4 consecutive weeks without good reason will be contacted and then removed from the group so that another child may benefit.
