BUMS! Artistic Director Agreement
Following are the terms of agreement between Great Hall Theatrical and an artistic director (furthermore referred to as the director). The roles of the director include (but are not limited to): (1) working with the producers to understand the business requirements of the show; (2) assembling an artistic team and crew (such an assistant director, a stage manager, a costume designer, a set designer, an audio engineer, a lighting designer, etc.); as needed, the producers will assist with building a team; (3) leading the team to make an artistic plan for how the show will be executed; (4) creating a rehearsal schedule; (5) holding auditions and assembling casts; the producers will also assist with this as needed; (6) working with a stage manager and/or property owner to coordinate facility usage; (7) leading rehearsals; (8) maintaining the morale of the cast and crew and working with a stage manager to resolve related problems as they come up; (9) consulting with the team and the producers about the progress of the show (at least once a week) and implementing feedback; (10) handing off the show to the stage manager at the time of performance.

It is anticipated that the show will be partly or completely double cast. It is up to the director to determine how to work with both casts, whether rotating within rehearsals or holding separate rehearsals. The director should have about eight weeks to put the show together. It is typical to hold rehearsals on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. As everyone will be volunteering their time, we ask that the director be mindful of people's feelings, be strict about starting and ending on time, and avoid requiring attendance when not strictly necessary. To avoid team burnout and to ensure efficient time usage, the producers may require that certain days be taken off, such as Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As most works of Great Hall Theatrical are continually being improved upon, we value the director's feedback. While most changes to the script or music should be completed before rehearsals begin, some of the most valuable ideas come during rehearsals as the characters and scenes take shape. Thus we ask that the director be accommodating and supportive as reasonable changes are made by the playwright or composer. However, as we know that significant changes can be problematic as the production matures, it will be required that, after a certain date to be agreed upon between the director and the playwright/composer, no further changes will be made unless requested by the director. We encourage the director to communicate a proposed date for this deadline as they plan the rehearsals.

This is a voluntary role done for the love of theater, however, Great Hall Theatrical would like to thank the director for their time with a $500 honorarium, which will be given at a cast party (usually immediately following the striking of the set). It is anticipated that the director will be trusted and honored with most (if not all) artistic decisions, however, for the good of the production, the producers reserve their right to step in, assist, override, and make executive decisions as they see fit. Consequently, if the producers determine that the director is not meeting this agreement or the needs of the production, the director may be replaced. The director may also terminate this agreement at will, though we ask that the director assist the producers in finding a replacement director or at least in providing sufficient time for the producers to do so. In any case of termination, the honorarium will be forfeited.
