Founded in 1999, Centre A is Canada’s only public gallery devoted to contemporary Asian and Asian diasporic art. Our mission is to build an inclusive community for contemporary Asian art and foster a greater understanding of evolving cultural experiences and identities. We are committed to creating mentorship opportunities for emerging artists and cultural workers, while facilitating collaborations across local, national, and international contexts. Our Reading Room is home to an extensive collection of books and research materials, including the Finlayson Collection of Rare Asian Art Books.

// Gallery Attendant //
The public’s first point of contact with Centre A, gallery attendants greet and introduce visitors to our current exhibitions, respond to public inquiries, issue memberships, and ensure that all visitors have a welcoming and enriching experience.
Volunteer shifts are available during gallery hours Tuesday-Saturday 12-5pm, and during extended hours for special events.
Responsibilities Include: -Greeting visitors and answering inquiries -Promoting current and upcoming exhibitions and programs -Assisting with opening and closing procedures -Issuing memberships -Art minding and general maintenance -Tracking visitor statistics and feedback -Assisting with light administrative duties from time to time
Qualifications: -Experience working and communicating with the general public -Interest in Asian and Asian-diasporic experiences -Knowledge of contemporary art -An art education is an asset -Familiarity with a second language is an asset -Volunteers must be 16 years or older to apply
// Library Attendant //
Library Attendants aide in the organization, cataloguing and maintenance of our growing collection of art books and research materials. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the preservation of the Fraser Finlayson Collection of rare books on Classical Chinese and Japanese Art!
Responsibilities Include: -Introducing visitors to the Reading Room and responding to public inquiries -Assisting visitors in identifying and locating library resources -Cataloguing and displaying library materials -Entering materials into our library database -Organizing and reshelving literary materials -Promoting current and upcoming exhibitions and programs
Qualifications -Experience working and communicating with the general public -Applicants with previous library/cataloguing experience are encouraged to apply -Knowledge of Asian art is an asset
// Installation Assistants //
Installation Assistants assist with the installation and take-down of exhibitions. Preference will be given to those who have prior gallery experience, or is interested in gaining skills in visual art exhibit preparation and installation.
Volunteer opportunities will be available in conjunction with upcoming exhibitions. Time commitment is variable.
Responsibilities Include: -Assisting with the installation and/or takedown of exhibitions -Assisting with labelling and mounting didactic material -Painting -Hanging artworks -Moving and/or building plinths
Qualifications -Previous preparator experience is an asset -Experience using power tools is an asset -Comfort with heights -Interest and/or background in operations of Art Gallery exhibitions. -Detail oriented, with a strong focus on accuracy and creativity
// Event Assistants //
Event Assistants will provide support for special events and public programming. Events may vary. Duties may include set up or tear down, greet attendees, provide basic event information, work a registration table, manning the bar, and answering general enquiries.
Volunteer opportunities will be available in conjunction with special events and public programming. Time commitment varies by event.
Responsibilities Include: -Greeting and directing event attendees -Overseeing registration and/or coat check -Serving refreshments and alcoholic beverages* -Setting up and tearing down for special events -Tracking visitor and visiting member statistics
Qualifications -Experience working and communicating with the public -Friendly and approachable demeanor -Available evenings and weekends -Prior event experience is an asset *Bartenders must be 19+ with a valid Serving It Right certificate
Additional positions available in translation, research, documentation, fundraising and sponsorship!
Successful candidates will serve without remuneration.
