In July, young people, union members, and socialist Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s office made Seattle the country’s first abortion sanctuary city. Inspired by that victory, socialist feminists in Dane County, Wisconsin just won the first abortion sanctuary legislation in a trigger-ban state! A similar victory was just won by socialists in Chicago. Working people in Kansas won a landslide victory in overwhelmingly rejecting a ballot measure to remove abortion rights from the state constitution.

These victories demonstrate that it’s possible to fight back against the shameful Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. But to defeat the right wing, working and young people and the rank and file of the labor movement will need to build our own movements independent of the Democratic Party.

The next step in making Seattle an abortion sanctuary is fighting to make all abortion in Seattle free by increasing the Amazon Tax, including for people fleeing persecution from any state where abortion is now punishable. To win, we need the movement’s voice in City Hall to demand that every Democrat on the Seattle City Council vote Yes on Councilmember Sawant’s bill to fund free abortion by taxing the rich, as part of a People’s Budget!
