YCRC Navigation Training Assessment

This assessment is designed to assess your understanding of the YCRC Navigation Training presentation, and is a requirement of the British Rowing Club Safety Audit. Please take the time to review the YCRC Navigation Training presentation and understand its contents prior to filling in this assessment.

It is a requirement of all members wishing to cox or steer a boat (single sculls included) to complete this assessment with a score of 100%. If a member does not achieve this, they may still row, but may not steer any boats. This requirement extends to the use of private boats using YCRC facilities.

This assessment collects your name and squad only, and this information will be handled in accordance with the YCRC GDPR policy.

4. Based on your direction of travel, which side of the river should you row on? *

Left

5. If crews are racing side by side, and there is an oncoming vessel, what should you do? *

Crew on the wrong side push to get ahead and move back to the correct side

Shout at the oncoming crew to ensure they have seen you and tucked in out of your way

Try to squeeze past 3 crews abreast

Crew on the wrong side to slow down and tuck in behind the crew on the correct side

6. When approaching the railway bridge at Poppleton, which arch should you use? *

Right hand arch in the direction of travel

Left hand arch in big boats, right hand arch in small boats

Either arch, as long as a lookout is kept

Whichever arch your coach tells you to use

7. In which situation is it acceptable to spin your boat? *

Anywhere not outside the boathouse, as long as you can see

Only at set landmarks, and as quickly as possible

Only which you have a clear line of sight in both directions, are clear of oncoming crews and are more than 100m clear of a bridge or bend

Whenever you are ready

8. When returning to the club from upstream, before you land you must: *

Row directly to the steps

Land only the top two sets of steps

Proceed through Lendal Bridge and spin beyond the moored boats and approach from the downstream direction

Row to the steps and spin so that you are facing upstream when you land

9. When approaching the steps from the downstream direction you must: *

Tuck in tightly to the bank on the club house side

Proceed on the Minster side until through Lendal Bridge, then cross when clear

Cross before you reach Lendal bridge but make sure it is clear

Spin above the club and approach from the upstream direction

10. What does 3 blasts of the City Cruises horn mean? *

I am turning to starboard (right)

I am turning to port (left)

I am moving astern (backwards)

Danger, I do not understand your intentions
