The ABC Reparations Housing Campaign is a project based in mutual aid, community care, and reparations for racialized harm. We plan to raise $250,000 for the Chaplin-Thompson family, who have been profoundly impacted by racist police violence and housing discrimination in Olympia, WA / on Squaxin land. The Chaplin-Thompson family have identified safe, secure housing as their number one priority.
We are asking folks to think honestly about how much you can afford to give, and let us know your plan. If you are fortunate enough to have reliable housing, please consider contributing the amount of ONE HOUSING PAYMENT. You may not be able to contribute this all on your own, so this is a good opportunity to practice mobilizing resources within your community. Think about what you have to contribute: an art show? a silent auction? a class or workshop? a text to all your friends? We understand this is a big ask, and we are here to support you.
*** For tax season, we are requesting that folks give some or all of their tax return. You may choose to give the amount you get as a Mortgage Interest Deduction, which is one of the most inequitable provisions in the tax code. This deduction disproportionately benefits wealthier homeowners. Redistributing your tax savings is a tangible way to take action and address that inequity. Check out this calculator to determine how much in taxes you are saving due to the MID.
