Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Sanctuary Kitchen!
Volunteers contribute their time, skills and passions, and are essential and valued partners in our mission. Since the pandemic, our programming has pivoted to a focus on Sanctuary Kitchen chefs preparing multicultural cuisine for weekly curbside pickup, local Farmers Markets, catering, and outsourcing to local food speciality stores.
Sanctuary Kitchen uses
signup.com to schedule volunteer shifts. It provides all the details of an event or opportunity including information about shift times, location, and parking. After joining our Volunteer Team, you will be sent an invite to join this private group where you can sign up for one shift or a regular, weekly shift.
Here are the present volunteer opportunities:
ASSIST CHEFS IN THE KITCHEN: Meet Sanctuary Kitchen chefs from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Mauritius, Nepal and Senegal and work alongside them to assist with food preparation and packaging. Volunteers can sign up for one shift or on an ongoing basis (e.g. every Thursday afternoon). The latter is highly desirable (but not required) as it allows volunteers to become familiar with the chefs, the kitchen setup and cooking routines. Both morning and afternoon shifts are available Monday-Friday. No prior kitchen experience is needed; we will offer an onsite orientation to the kitchen and any training necessary.
GROCERY PICKUP AND DELIVERY: Assist with picking up/delivering preordered groceries to Sanctuary Kitchen. You can combine this with a shift working in the kitchen, if interested.
FARMERS' MARKET VOLUNTEERS: Assist with sales of food products made by Sanctuary Kitchen chefs at CitySeed’s Farmers Markets and the Madison Farmers Market. Presently, this includes: Friday, Madison Farmers Market, Saturday Wooster Square Farmers' Market and Sunday Edgewood Park Farmer Market. Markets offers a diverse range of local food products for sale. Sign up for the market if you enjoy teamwork, interacting with customers, can handle money/calculate sales and manage other supportive tasks.
INTERPRETERS AND TRANSLATORS: The native languages of Sanctuary Kitchen chefs presently include Arabic, Farsi or Dari, Wolof, French, and Nepali. We regularly require assistance with interpretation (both live and virtual) for general communication purposes as well as during our events. Translation is also needed for written communication. Volunteers must be fluent in one of these languages, but no formal interpretation experience is required; we will provide instruction and training.
Please fill out this Volunteer Application and the Sanctuary Kitchen Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch with you once we've received your completed form. We look forward to meeting you and working together!
Thank you! Gracias! Tashakkor! Asante! Shukran!
