Formative Assessment of Language Use in Foreign Language Contexts

Formative assessments have a fundamental role in understanding how well students are doing in terms of mastering course content and meeting course objectives in addition to providing ongoing feedback to instructors and students. Yet, it is very challenging to develop strategies for an effective use of formative classroom-based assessments when the intended use and interpretation of students’ performance on formative assessment tasks are not clear. This session, first, will focus on defining formative assessment of language use and introduce its key characteristics. Then, it will present a framework of task characteristics to utilize language-use tasks for formative purposes.
