Higher education is about more than just professionalization. For many students, the university is the place where they first question their deepest ideologies, strengthen their civic consciousness, and more clearly define and shape their
politics. For better or for worse, the classroom is always a politicized space
riddled with conflict and tension that we, as teachers, are in charge of
mediating and resolving to the best of our abilities. This workshop
focuses on the intersection of care ethics and civic consciousness in the
communication classroom. The primary focus of the workshop is to discuss how
a care ethics framework can help teachers to better engage with sensitive
subjects that may challenge students' ideological belief systems. Facilitator,
Karlié Rodríguez, and guest speakers (John Gulledge & Agnes Sastre-Rivera) will discuss strategies they employ in their classrooms to foster civic engagement beyond the classroom and reflect on why it matters. Dr. Eladio Abreu will also share his experience advocating for diversity in the science classroom through the STEM Race & Ethnicity GER
initiative.
