We are the members and staff of SEIU and its local affiliates around the county. We call upon Mary Kay Henry and all other local presidents to immediately expel any police unions and police members from our organization.

The labor movement was built on solidarity among working class people from all different trades and walks of life. But police officers have never been a part of that movement. In fact, when our brothers and sisters were fighting for their unions in the early 1900s, it was the police who were called in to beat up and murder working class people on behalf of the bosses. And we see those patterns repeated in our present day. SEIU is a two million member organization composed of black and brown workers. The communities our members live and work in are the same that are terrorized day in and day out by the police. And often when our workers are out on the picket line and taking action, it is the police who stand in their way and defend these institutions who exploit our members.

SEIU calls itself an anti-racist organization, dedicated to the empowerment of black people. Until they denounce and expel all police from any part of our organization, that is not true. Police unions are responsible for some of the worst police officers getting away with their crimes. We will not allow our time, our dues, or our energy to go towards supporting that kind of organization.
