The North Island Ski Touring Meet is a fun and sociable weekend, and a great opportunity to get out and do some ski touring. The meet will be based at Tukino Lodge on Mt Ruapehu and is a chance to find likeminded people of similar experience and enjoy some spring touring adventures. Please note this is not a led trip, so you will need to start or join a group, and once your group leaves the lodge you will need to be able to look after yourselves.
To help you keep safe, the meet organisers will keep a track of who is going where so you will need to record your intentions on each day, and let them know when you arrive and leave the lodge.
Safe ski touring requires a range of skills and, in addition to experience with touring equipment, participants should be proficient in all the basic alpine skills taught on the Snowcraft course, including:• evaluating terrain for safe travel, including avalanche safety• navigation• avalanche transceiver use
This is neither an instruction course or a led trip, and so is appropriate only for those with suitable experience. The volunteer meet organisers will take all reasonable steps to support you to be safe, but cannot accept responsibility for any loss or injury which may be suffered.
NZAC is planning to run a Intro to Backcountry Skiing Course at the same lodge in late September, and alumni of this course should have suitable skills for attending this meet. See https://alpineclub.org.nz/skiing-touring/courses/intro-to-ski-touring-course/ for more details.
Please accept that you will be responsible for your own safety during the meet.
