Cook Children's Medical Center offers training for concussion oversight teams required by
Texas House Bill 2038

Texas House Bill 2038 requires each school district and open-enrollment charter school with students who participate in athletic activities to appoint a concussion oversight team. This team is required to establish a return-to-play/practice protocol following a force or impact believed to have caused a concussion. Each member of and anyone who appoints members to the concussion oversight team is required to have training on concussions. This requirement includes athletic trainers, athletic directors, coaches, school administrators, school nurses and other health care professionals.
This program is designed to give school personnel a thorough understanding of concussion- related matters. Craig Henderson, Associate Director of Academic Services, Region XIII, will discuss the details of HB 2038 and how to integrate them into district planning. Cam Brandt, MS, RN, CEN, CPEN, CPN, Christi Dutton, MSN, RN, ENP, ACNP-BC, CEN, CLNC, and Melodie Davis, MSN, RN, CPN will describe how to evaluate a child with a possible concussion and which signs and symptoms to look for. They will also discuss injury prevention strategies for school-aged children involved in athletic programs and look at the risks and long-term effects of repetitive concussions seen in school-aged athletes.
Cook Children’s Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Materials - This activity provides 2.5 contact hours. You must attend the activity in its entirety and complete and return the evaluation tool.
