The Cook position at Peterkin is responsible for safe and effective food preparation for Peterkin guests. This application covers all kitchen positions - Lead Cook, Cook, and Assistant Cook - which are distinguished by level of experience. This position is at or near full-time during the summer camp schedule (approximately 7 weeks in 2024), and part-time during other seasons, serving for retreats and conferences, primarily from March-May and August-November.

Position will report to the Hospitality Manager, and will have primary responsibility for preparing quality food for guests, in accordance with safe food handling and preparation practices.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Cook and serve all food to proper specifications in a timely manner.
Ensure proper food temperatures are maintained and food is stored correctly. Ensures freshness and quality of all menu items.
Perform opening, closing and side work duties as instructed and according to proper guidelines. Keep workstations and equipment clean, organized, sanitized, and sufficiently stocked.
Set up and utilize kitchen equipment to prepare food items such as: knives, slicers, whips, pots, pans, warmers, steamers, grills, ovens, dishwasher, etc.
Clean, wash dishes and pots and pans, and perform general kitchen and dining room cleaning.
Receive, check and put away food deliveries.
Follow and uphold all health codes and sanitation regulations.
Perform and document periodic temperature checks for kitchen equipment.
Ability to work varied hours/days, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, based on the summer camp and retreat/conference schedule.
Lead Cook specific duties include leading the team in the preparation of meals.
Effectively communicate with the Hospitality Manager any kitchen issues or needs.
Perform other duties as assigned, whcih could include some housekeeping duties such as cleaning and laundry.
Requirements:
Requirements for all applicants:
- Must have WV Food Handling card, or ability to complete the training before starting the job.
General knowledge of food preparation required.
Must have transportation to and from work.
Must be focused on working safely and looking out for the safety of other team members.
Must be able to work effectively with others in a team environment.
Must have a strong work ethic and strong bias for continuous improvement.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, daytime, evenings, and weekends.
Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
Additional requirements for Lead Cooks:
- Must have significant experience preparing food for medium to large groups
- Leadership experience desired.
Additional requirements for Cooks:
- Previous/proven experience working in Peterkin kitchen.
Target compensation:
Compensation is to be commensurate with experience, so some minor increases or decreases to rates below may be made in certain circumstances. Target compensation is as follows:
- Lead Cook - $16/hour
- Cook - $15/hour
- Assistant Cook - $12.50/hour
