Application Instructions
Applications will be reviewed and selections will be made by the UCSD Xavier Program Director with input from Xavier and UCSD program staff. Applications are due on January 30.

After completing the application, please email James Nieh ( the following documents:
1) A personal Statement (500 words) addressing the following points:
How did you become interested in your field of study?
What are your educational and career goals?
What experiences have contributed toward your preparation for your educational and career goals?
What are your research interests?
Why are you applying to the UC San Diego Xavier Partnership Program?
How are you a “match” for the UC San Diego Xavier Partnership Program?
Optional: Describe background characteristics that may have placed you at an educational disadvantage (English language learner, family economic history, lack of educational opportunity, disability, etc.)
2) CV/Resume
3) A copy of current Academic Transcripts (unofficial is OK)

In addition, two (2) letters of recommendation should be emailed to James C. Nieh ( or mailed to him at 9500 Gilman Drive, MC0116, La Jolla, CA 92093-0116.

Letters of Recommendation can be from a counselor, faculty member, research mentor, or principal investigator. The letter should address the following questions:
1) What is your relationship to the applicant? Please include information on how long you have known the applicant and the extent of your interactions.
2) What is the applicant’s current research topic? If not actively involved in research, what are the applicant’s interests?
3) Please comment on the applicant’s academic merit including their aptitude for pursuing a Ph.D.
4) In your opinion, why and how would the applicant benefit from participating in the UC San Diego Xavier Partnership Program?
5) What is it about the applicant that leads you to recommend him/her for the UC San Diego Xavier Partnership Program?
