One Song was founded in 2002 by Katie Yow and Daniel Elam. The organization is run by the Board of Directors, which consists solely of high-school age teenagers. Board members take leading roles in productions, serving as production managers, directors, technical directors, costume designers, and publicity managers.
Each summer, One Song puts on one show directed by a non-board member. Anyone of high school or college age is welcome to apply. No prior One Song experience is required. Before you fill out the application, make sure you are aware of and ready for the time and effort it takes to direct a show with One Song. Directing a show is a complicated process, and you, as a director, will have many responsibilities. You must be ready and willing to collaborate with all members of the One Song Board of Directors during the production process; you have to be open to their input and advice. You will also have to select a cast, provide a rehearsal space, and devote the necessary rehearsal time. Most importantly, you must be ready to have fun during the process!
This year, the summer show will run during the first weekend August at the Carrboro Artscenter (August 1-3). If you are selected to direct, you will be asked to sign a contract that further outlines your responsibilities. Feel free to send any questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please feel free to link to additional pages as needed. Applicants will be contacted shortly after the deadline, interviews will be held during the weeks after the deadline.
PLEASE NOTE: For our Summer show, we prefer shows with larger casts that are more suitable for a wide range of audience members. However, we request that you limit the size of the cast to no more than 20 actors. Please keep this in mind when considering shows to pitch.
Thank you for applying to direct One Song’s 2019 summer show.
