    Because the ink used create the letters, iron gall ink, contained tannin, and tannin is a chemical used to tan animal hides (the surface media of medieval manuscripts), to turn animal hides into leather. And, leather is considerably less susceptible to decomposition than is untreated animal hide or vellum. Hence, the velllum calligraphed into letters survived, but the untreated, non-inked, blank vellum that surrounded the letters did not.
