    Committee Descriptions

    Advocacy Committee brings forth problems HISD students face day to day in schools to the closest people in charge. They handle individual student grievances when their respective schools don’t. Advocacy Committee also strategize student voice in public board meetings and work with students that need help in drafting speeches. Agenda Committee designs and implements initiatives to address the issues affecting all students within HISD. Examples of initiatives could include alumni organizations, career fairs, a college help desk, district-wide socials, elementary and high school buddy programs, arts nights, etc. Finance Committee handles the flow of money in and out of the Student Congress. It develops fundraising campaigns and events, works with sponsors and partner organizations, and appropriates funding for different Congressional initiatives to make the sure the Congress can run smoothly and efficiently. Governance Committee is in charge of the logistics and governing procedures of the Congress. This includes anything dealing with the Constitution, handling transportation, finding meeting spaces, and creating establishing formal procedures for Congressional meetings and membership. Governance also handles all research for the Congress. Outreach Committee manages the communication from the Student Congress to outside people and organizations. This includes managing social media accounts, keeping a student blog updated, recruiting writers/videographers, and making sure the newsletter is sent out on a monthly basis. Outreach Committee is also in charge of recruiting new members and reaching out to other organizations that may be interested in the Congress’ work.
