In January 2023, Georgia State troopers killed Manuel “Tortuguita” Esteban Paez Terán (they/them) as they protested environmental degradation on the intended site of “Cop City,” the proposed militarized police training facility that, if completed, would become the largest in the US. Terán’s independent autopsy showed 57 distinct bullet wounds while their hands were raised and legs crossed.
Terán’s death thrust Cop City into the international spotlight and raised scrutiny over the many corporate contributions from companies like UPS, Home Depot, and Delta to the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF), the organization directly responsible for bringing the project to fruition.
Nearly three years ago, mass protests sparked calls to divest from police violence, and invest in Black communities. Since then, financial institutions and investors have made unprecedented statements to stand against racism and police brutality. As investors, we must make sure those statements weren't just performative.
On June 5th, the Atlanta City Council is scheduled to vote on the $33.5 million taxpayer contribution for Cop City that will complement $60 million of corporate support. UPS, Home Depot, Delta, and other corporations are financing what could become the largest police training facility in the US
Join investors as we make fulfill these statements and call on corporations to stop financing Cop City:
- If you directly own shares of UPS, Home Depot, Delta or other corporations associated with the Atlanta Police Foundation, urge company management to publicly withdraw financial and institutional support, including having appointed directors step down from board membership.
- If you maintain exposure to the aforementioned companies through a mutual fund, reach out to your financial advisor and ask them to share this letter with firm management and encourage them to sign on.
- Urge your asset manager to join other investors in the commitment to stop financing the growth of the criminal legal system, including police foundations, across all asset classes.
You can find the full sign on letter here.
We hope you'll join us,
