The Arc of Hanover Board Application Form

The Arc of Hanover is currently seeking candidates for our Board of Directors!

Who we are:

The Arc of Hanover has been serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families since 1974. The Arc of Hanover is a grassroots non-profit organization started by families and concerned citizens. The Arc has grown and changed through the years to meet the needs of individuals and their families. The Arc of Hanover is one of nearly 700 Arc chapters nationally. We provide direct services to Hanover County residents and assist many in the neighboring localities with information and referral. The Arc of Hanover advocates for the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in all aspects of community living. We educate elected officials and the public about the needs of children and adults with disabilities.

The Arc of Hanover is managed by a volunteer, working Board of Directors. The Arc of Hanover receives no governmental funding and is dependent on donors, fundraising events, and private grants. The Arc of Hanover opened The Arc of Hanover Thrift Store in April of 2021. Funding generated through the Thrift Store is used to support the programs and operations of The Arc of Hanover and, at times, as approved by The Arc of Hanover Board of Directors, in support of other community organizations.

Who we are seeking:

We are seeking candidates to fill vacancies on our Board of Directors and seeking to maintain an active list of potential nominees in the case of unexpected vacancies or Board expansion. We are looking for members with diverse backgrounds and ethnicities and from all regions of the area, with a common interest in the civil rights and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. We maintain voting positions for self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities on our Board.

Time Commitments/Responsibilities:

Board members are expected to attend all Board meetings, which are held on the third Tuesday of each month. They are also encouraged to attend as many events sponsored by The Arc of Hanover as their schedules permit. Each Board member will give meaningful service on a committee of the Board -- placement of an applicant determined through a discussion with the Board President about strengths and desires. Most successful Board members spend 2-10 hours per week in service. Our Board culture anticipates that Board members also financially support The Arc of Hanover at the level comfortable for them, which can include service in fundraising activities.

What you can expect:

We are a volunteer Board that serves for no pay. You will learn about vital issues affecting the quality of life and services for Virginians and, specifically, Hanoverians, with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We endeavor to increase our program and advocacy opportunities to better serve all of our citizens in Hanover County. You can expect to serve on a committee or workgroup at all times when you are on the Board, although that may not be the same committee or workgroup through your term, which is 2 years in length. This is an opportunity to use your current skills and acquire new ones.
