Dr. Kevin Kumashiro for the U.S. Department of Education
Dear President-Elect Biden and the Education Transition Team:

Like no other time before, our nation needs visionary, knowledgeable, skillful, and diverse leaders who will not only reverse the harmful policies of recent years but also lay the groundwork for a more democratic, equitable, and just system of public education. We, educators, scholars, leaders, and organizations across the United States, recommend Dr. Kevin Kumashiro for Secretary or one of the top presidential appointments in the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Kumashiro began his career almost 30 years ago as a school teacher and university professor and in the time since, has authored or edited over ten books and dozens of academic articles on educational policy, school reform, teacher preparation, and educational equity; served as the dean of a school of education and president of a national association; keynoted conferences of dozens of the leading educational organizations; and consulted for or spoken at hundreds of schools and universities around the world. He has received some of the highest recognitions, including the prestigious Social Justice in Education Award from the American Educational Research Association and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his groundbreaking work examining the research and evidentiary basis—or lack thereof—of a vast array of reform initiatives, including ones that claimed to advance equity and justice, but accomplished quite the opposite.

Dr. Kumashiro’s legacy of leveraging research to elevate and transform the public debate about education is far-reaching, not only because of his analytical capacities to connect the dots and see behind the rhetoric, but also because of his organizing and bridge-building capacities to mobilize various constituents for collective action. For instance, as founding chair of the national network, Education Deans for Justice and Equity, he has brought together hundreds of leaders to develop resources and build institutional capacity for more significant impact in schools and society. Long a champion of public schools and of educational equity, his work influences and is used in countless schools, colleges, and educational organizations, and we can say with confidence that he would draw on these connections and stature to rally the nation.

We urge you to appoint Dr. Kumashiro to lead the Department of Education, and we are eager to see how he leads us all to realize the potential of public schools. Thank you!
