Thank you for Co-Sponsoring the Climate and Community Protection Act (S 6617). Please use your leadership role to do everything that is possible to get the CCPA to a vote on the Senate floor!
It is incumbent upon New York State to stay at the forefront of clean energy development, production and distribution; clean energy jobs and innovation; and climate justice. The goal of the CCPA is to get New York to rely on 100% renewable energy by 2050 (and 50% by 2030), and to achieve this goal in an equitable manner that provides resources for vulnerable and front-line communities and establishes specific protections for workers. We in Brooklyn know how susceptible we are to the ravages of climate change. Now that President Trump plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, it is more important than ever for New York to be a leader in the fight against climate change. The country looks to New York to lead on climate action while creating good jobs and investing in low-income communities, including those in the front lines of environmental and climate risk.
As IDC leader Senator Klein has stated, ‘the Independent Democratic Conference is creating a majority coalition with Republicans because you must engage in order to make things happen.’ On the issue of climate, now is the time to make things happen. The IDC must insist that its Republican partners bring the Climate and Community Protection Act to a vote, and finally pass the bill that will help protect New York families from the impacts of climate change while ensuring jobs in the clean, renewable energy economy are governed by fair labor standards. The bill is already moving in the Assembly and has attracted bi-partisan support.
New York’s proud tradition of progressive leadership has never been more crucial. New York must be bolder, more ambitious, and more visionary than ever before. There are no second chances when it comes to our climate. We call on you to help us move forward by championing the Community Climate Protection Act.
