Audience: K-12 Reading/Writing Teachers, Interventionist, and Coaches
Essential Question: How do the revised Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading and Writing align to evidence and guide instruction?
Rationale: The KAS for Reading and Writing are in their final legislative stage and should be in law by late spring. Revisions align with current research and may require instructional shifts.

DescriptionThis five-hour session will explain how evidence drove the revisions of the KAS for Reading and Writing. We will analyze key portions of the revised standards and make connections to daily reading and writing instruction in every classroom. You will have time in breakout sessions to apply revisions in the standards to your instructional plan. This learning will support you in delivering high-quality literacy instruction that aligns research, evidence-based practice and literacy expectations for every student in Kentucky.
Objectives: - Analyze why specific revisions were made in our standards and how they align with the Science of Reading
- Examine how standards are bundled into cohort learning progressions in your high quality instructional resources
- Understand how text-based writing will grow your students literacy skills
- Plan for instructional implications of the revised standards in your first unit of instruction
