We are writing to express our solidarity with the Roblero Morales family in Kitchener-Waterloo, who are being threatened with deportation to Guatemala. This includes parents Sandra Morales and Daniel Roblero, as well as their six children, who came to Canada seeking safety. We call on the Trudeau government to step in to halt this deportation.

Currently, the family is awaiting a decision on their application for permanent residence on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds (H & C). While Daniel was deported on November 2nd, ahead of the rest of his family, he would be able to return if the application were accepted.

Both Sandra and Daniel are originally from Guatemala. They met in the US, after having fled persecution and violence in their home country. They started a family there, but as undocumented people, they felt increasingly threatened when Trump was elected, fearing their children would be taken away from them and that they would be deported. Under Trump, at least 5,460 children have been taken from migrant families.

The family came to Canada seeking refuge in 2017 and we refuse to turn our backs on them.

The US is not a safe place for them, and neither is Guatemala.

Also, three of their children have serious health issues. While the family is able to access the medical services and the care they need in a cost-effective way in Canada, this would not be the case in Guatemala.

They belong in Canada. They have family and community here. Sending the children to a country they have never stepped foot in would be a grave injustice.

We call on the Trudeau government to stop the family’s removal and to grant the family temporary residency status so the family can stay until their H & C application is decided. We also urge the Trudeau government to grant the family’s H & C application.

Refugees welcome! Migrants welcome! No one is illegal!
