Mad Farmers Collective operates a diversified vegetable farm and plant nursery located in downtown Indianapolis.  We (Matthew Jose and Amy Matthews) have been providing high-quality produce to our community through farmer’s markets, restaurants, and local grocers since 2011.  We work awfully hard to do this, but we think that the work is valuable, rewarding, and enjoyable.   We are currently hiring for the 2025 season!

About The Farm
Mad Farmers Collective is a collaboration between 2 urban farmers, Matthew Jose and Amy Matthews.  We grow on 2 sites on the near-southside of downtown Indianapolis.  Our primary focus is year-round, fresh vegetable production for local restaurants, stores, farmers markets, and our online store.  We also have a robust spring vegetable transplant business, in addition to a burgeoning native plant operation.  Throughout the year, we and work hard to provide local residents with the highest quality vegetables and transplants available.
Position Description
Positions Available: For the 2025 season, we have 2 part-time positions available. One position is seasonal Farm Crew position: May through October 2025, 15 - 20 hours/week.  This position is great for someone looking to gain experience in this field. The other position is a Farm and Nursery Assistant, with part-time year-round hours.  This position is great for someone with some experience in farm, nursery, or small business who wants to take on some more responsibilities over time.

Hours (both positions):  We have some flexibility in work hours, and can collaborate to match your availability with our needs.  Once we set a schedule, we prefer to keep it the same week to week. Market days will be 6:30 am - 3:00 pm.  There could be some seasonal variation in hours.    Please note that to be considered for a position, you MUST be willing to work 1 - 2 Saturdays/month.  This is very important to our operation.  Your regular weekly schedule could be adjusted to accommodate these Saturday shifts.

Location (both positions): Work would take place at our farm on South Meridian Street, our satellite greenhouse 3 miles south of the farm, and at the farmers market.

Compensation (both positions):  Hourly employees start at $16/hour.  Employees also have access to surplus plants and produce.  Hourly wage for the year-round Farm and Nursery Assistant will increase with experience and responsibilities.

The job (both positions):   Farm crew members are crucial to helping keep the farm healthy and productive.  Responsibilities will focus on preparing beds, weeding, removing and hauling crop debris, harvesting, washing produce, and packing orders.  All positions will assist with the Saturday farmers market 1 - 2 times a month.  Depending on the experience and skills of a staff member, other duties may also include greenhouse seeding, irrigation, and transplanting.  There are innumerable learning opportunities while working at Mad Farmers Collective.  While this is not a formal apprenticeship program, we do enjoy talking about farming strategies and techniques with employees who are interested and inquiring.  Crew members will gain some exposure to organic pest control, soil management, transplant production, season extension, and other intensive farming techniques.

For this position, you must be able to take direction well, follow instructions carefully, work efficiently, be flexible, and have a solid attitude--and a sense of humor is certainly welcome!  This position requires someone who is comfortable working independently, a good communicator, and a conscientious colleague.  The work is physically-demanding and can be monotonous, but still requires careful attention to detail and a quick pace.  We work in any (safe) weather condition including rain, heat, cold, wind, and humidity.

Our ideal candidate has some previous farm or plant nursery experience.  Experience in related fields, such as landscaping, horticulture, or restaurants, is also valued! However, we will consider candidates without farm experience if you have a strong interest in farming and an excellent work ethic.

Notes on Farm and Nursery Assistant: This position will share the duties of the Farm Crew Member position initially.  As more training is provided by us and more experience gained by you, the position will evolve into more independent work and entail greater responsibility.  This position is for someone who wants to contribute their ideas and energy to help our small business evolve, adapt, and succeed!
