The 2019 Dr. Kay E. Woodward Scholarship Application
Dr. Kay E. Woodward is the president and owner of the J. W. Woodward Funeral Home, Inc., the oldest, black family-owned business in Spartanburg, SC. Prior to her leadership at the funeral home, Dr. Woodward was a Psychology professor at Converse College for 10 years and served on its Board of Trustees. Upon graduating from Spartanburg High School, Dr. Woodward attended Purdue University and earned her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctorate in Psychology with highest distinction.

In 2015 Purdue University recognized Dr. Woodward with a Pioneering Women Award. She was also nominated and recognized as a finalist for the Philanthropist of the Year Award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2016 Dr. Woodward received the Pioneering Women Award for Business from Spartanburg Methodist College. She also received a 2016 Women of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of America-Mountains to Midlands. In 2018, Dr. Woodward received the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Urban League of the Upstate.

Dr. Woodward is a tireless volunteer and philanthropist in her church, business, community and state. She enjoys worship, public service, and spending time with her friends and family. She regularly devotes her resources and experience to mentoring children and young adults in disadvantaged areas. She routinely and unselfishly invests in local service programs, projects, and opportunities in the name of the funeral home.

The Dr. Kay E. Woodward Scholarship awards $500 to a deserving student for his/her capacity to overcome significant barriers to education, as well as their commitment to making an impact on their schools and communities.

Scholarship Requirements
Applicants must be:
• Current high school student attending school in Spartanburg County who will graduate in the 2018-2019 academic school year; or currently enrolled full-time college freshman, sophomore, or junior from Spartanburg County for the current 2018-2019 academic year.
• Planning to pursue or already pursing a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution.
• Scholarship funds awarded to winners must be used for education purposes, such as tuition and school-related expenses.
• Student must possess a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher (high school and college).
• Student will need to provide a 500-word essay (high school) or 750-word essay (college) on their life and circumstances, how they were able to overcome obstacles to their education, and describe what goals they hope to achieve by receiving a college education.
• Student will need to provide a high resolution professional head shot.
• Submit the application by 5 p.m. on April 15, 2019.
• By submitting an application, you agree that what you send will be deemed non-confidential and you grant the Urban League of the Upstate the right to use, copy, modify, edit, publish, transmit, and display your submission via any media, and that the Urban League of the Upstate will be free to use your name, image, voice, city, state, essay and other identifying information, unless you specifically request in writing that we not do so. If applicant winner is under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign.
• In addition, before receipt of scholarship funds, winners must sign a scholarship release form which grants the Urban League of the Upstate the right to use, copy, modify, edit, publish, transmit, and display your submission via any media, and that the Urban League of the Upstate will be free to use your name and other identifying information, unless you specifically request in writing that we not do so. If applicant winner is under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign.
Selection Criteria
Once you apply, the Dr. Kay E. Woodward Scholarship selection committee judges each student on:
• Superior scholastic ability
• Service to community and school
• Successful articulation of essay topic
• Overall quality of application
