Join GHF Staff, Board Members, Neighbors & Groundhog Volunteers in managing Snyder Prairie with prescribed fire! We are seeking volunteers to assist with prescribed burning for the fall/winter burn season. Our burn season this year will begin in October with the goal of completing burns prior to the end of 2025.
If you are interested in joining us, please fill out the following form and indicate which dates you are available to assist with prescribed burns, SHOULD the weather conditions be favorable. We will not burn on all of the dates, and will ONLY burn when conditions are right for the particular areas that we need to burn. In total, we hope to accomplish all that we need to burn in a single day, with 2 days maximum. But weather is an unpredictable and necessary element to prescribed burns going well, so it may take more or less time.
Nicole will contact everyone on the list for a given date with updates on whether the burn is a go or not. Please note that we will make these calls at the relative last minute, so be mindful of that with planning & checking communications. If you choose to provide your phone number, we will only use it to contact you should emailed plans change.
Once we complete all of our planned burns, Nicole will notify everyone that has signed up that we are done for the season and to remove any remaining dates from your calendar.
Snyder Prairie is located approximately 25 miles north of Topeka near Mayetta, KS a few miles east of HWY 75. Detailed directions will be emailed out with reminders.
Be sure to dress for the weather conditions and avoid synthetic fabrics and shoes that may melt when exposed to high temperatures. Cotton, wool, and leather gloves/boots are highly recommended. Water is not available at Snyder, so be sure to bring your own, and a snack if you think might need one. Please email Nicole at
ghflandmanagement@gmail.com for further details, or with any questions or concerns that you may have.
**Dates may be added in December, January, or February as needed**
