Debate Leader School 2019/2020: Application form
Project "Debate Leader School 2019/2020" is an amazing educational project organized by the Latvian Debate Association "QUO Tu doma?" and supported by the British Council Latvia since 2016. More than 200 students and 70 teachers have already participated in the project. Will you be the next debate leader?
During the project participants get to participate in various lectures and practical workshops, starting with "What is debating and critical thinking?", "What is public speech?", "How to make a good argument?", ending with "Introduction to economics" and "Migration and globalization". Throughout the project, lectures will become more advanced and diverse. Participants are also encouraged to suggest their own ideas on lectures they would find beneficial to have. Working language of the project is English, therefore all participants should have sufficient English language level.
Some of the lecturers that have participated in the project include Inga Spriņģe (Journalist, Co-Founder of the Re:Baltica), Morten Hansen (Head of Economics Department of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga), Andris Grafs (Vice President Latvia at the Baltic Institute of Corporate Governance), Dr.Solvita Denisa Liepniece (Assistant Professor at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences), Konstantin Benyumov (Chief Editor at Meduza English), Mārtiņš Zemītis ( European Commission Representation in Riga), Oskars Priede (Public speaking trainer), Liene Gātere (Head of the Transparency International DELNA), Ernests Štāls (Co-founder and Board member of TechChill and TechHub Riga), all Co-Founders and Board Members of the Latvian Debate Association "QUO Tu doma?" and many more amazing professionals!
Schedule of the project:
26th - 27th of October, 2019 (first two-day session);
3rd - 4th of January, 2020 (second two-day session);
End-of-January, 2020 (an international debate tournament in Tallinn, Estonia);
14th - 15th of March, 2020 (third two-day session/also graduation of the project).
All sessions will happen in Riga. On average each session will start at 11am on the first day and end around 4pm on the second day, therefore, if you live further away from Riga, you will be able to catch the last bus or train. If you live far away (100+ km) from Riga, hotel/hostel will be covered for you by organizers of the event.
Project itself is free of charge, which covers all lectures, all meals, transport expenses (bus, train tickets or gas bill), hotel/hostel in Riga for participants from further regions, additional educational materials and even participation in an international debate tournament in Tallinn, Estonia.
Model of the project: each school is represented by 1 teacher and 2 students.
This form is to be filled by students and a teacher willing to apply for the project. Each student has to write his/her own motivation letter. It is very important that all of the information is correct (e-mail address, phone number, name of the school, etc.), so please check you application form before submitting it! The application form will close at 23:59 on September 30. It will not be possible to submit application after the deadline. Applicants that will be chosen to participate in the project will be informed until October 6, 2019 (latest), but we will start responding earlier to exceptional applications received, therefore you can secure your place in the project much faster by writing the best application ever! You might be contacted by organizers of the project for some follow-up questions regarding your application.
All applicants, which will be chosen for the project, will receive all the necessary information for successful participation in the project! By submitting this form you agree that all the information provided in this form is accurate.
Once the project will be finished (31st of March, 2020), all information submitted in this form will be deleted. Information submitted in this form will be collected and used only by the Latvian Debate Association "QUO Tu domā?" and its supporters for organizing and evaluating project "Debate Leader School 2019/2020".

Will you need a place in a hotel/hostel for all of the sessions?
Hotel/hostel would be provided for the night between the first and the second day of the event, for example, from 26th till 27th of October. This will be ensured and booked by the project's organizers.

I will be able to participate in all of the sessions
Last year more than 60 schools applied to participate in the project. We expect it will be even more this year. Yet only 20 schools will be given an opportunity to participate in the project. Therefore, all schools, which are chosen, are expected to participate in all sessions (and there is only three sessions)! And, as there are only three sessions, certificates of completion will be given ONLY to those participants, which have been to all three sessions. By submitting this form you promise that you will participate in all sessions.
