Artist Visit to W.S. Merwin's Garden in Preparation for Mālama Wao Akua Art Exhibition (2018)
The Merwin Conservancy is pleased to be partnering with East Maui Watershed Partnership again this year for the Mālama Wao Akua native species art program. During the visit, we will hike into the valley where W.S. Merwin has painstakingly restored a once barren landscape to a lush forest of rare palms from around the word. Among these palms are beautiful examples of young and mid-age native loulu (Pritchardia) palms that are endemic to Maui Nui. There is space for 5 artists to join each of two visits, on July 12th and August 15th, both beginning at 9am and ending at 12 noon. Preferably, artists will sign up for ONE of the two visits, to allow for other artists to join. Each time, the group will meet at a public lot in Haiku and carpool over to the garden location. We will reach out to artists on a first-come, first-served basis until all 5 spots on both dates are full. Mahalo nui!
