Welcome to Dartmouth’s Fall 26 production of The Cherry Orchard in a new adaptation by Benedict Andrews. Chekhov wrote the play in 1903, and it has continued to inspire generations as one of the greatest, most beautiful plays ever written.  I saw this new adaptation in London two years ago, and was blown away by how contemporary and timeless The Cherry Orchard feels right now. And of course it does.  It is about an aristocratic family clinging to their egos, their privilege, their outsized sense of their importance in the world as they are being displaced by the very people they kept down.  The age ranges are teens to 40s, so extremely playable for Dartmouth students.  We also will cast several musicians and invite students to come and play a folk type piece for us.  

We are providing audition sides so please choose a side that features a character you are interested in, or, if there is no side for that character, a side you respond to and would enjoy playing. We’ll do the side once, then I will offer some adjustments, and we’ll play again. Call backs will have materials for all characters and the information will be shared with the call back list.

There is very little intimacy in this production.  One kiss is scripted, and that kiss will be coached with an intimacy coordinator.  The play lives much more in a world with a lack of intimacy.

This is a beautiful play and important, now, for our students and audiences. Thank you for auditioning!

The Cherry Orchard, written by Anton Chekhov and adapted by Benedict Andrews, is the Department of Theater's Fall Term term Mainstage production, directed and designed by faculty members. It will be fully produced and designed, and actors will need to be off-book (their lines will need to be memorized) for this production.

Schedule Information - What You Can Expect

It’s important that you understand the time commitment expected for this level of production within the Department. But please know - we can be flexible within reason. Always feel free to talk with the director about your interest.

Rehearsal Schedule

First rehearsal:  Monday, September 21, 7:30pm (adjusted start time for those observing Yom Kippur).
Rehearsals will be: Monday, September 21 through Wednesday October 28, 2026.

General Rehearsal Schedule:

Mondays 7-10pm
Tuesdays 7-10pm
Wednesdays 7-10pm
Thursdays No Rehearsal
Fridays 4:30-7:30pm
Saturdays No Rehearsal
Sundays 1-5pm

  • Days off will be Thursdays and Saturdays, until we begin technical rehearsals and performances.
  • On Friday, October 2, company will be  released in time for Homecoming Bonfire.

Actors may not be scheduled for all rehearsals but should be available for all time slots. Actors will receive a weekly schedule that will detail the rehearsals at which they will be expected. We will do our very best to stick to that schedule but it is subject to change. We will also do our best to use your time as efficiently as possible. You will receive a daily schedule with updates/confirmation/further details.

Technical and Dress Rehearsals (when we add lights, sound, costumes, etc.)

Actors should expect to participate in all technical and dress rehearsals.

Technical rehearsals (with costumes) are  Saturday, October 31 through Tuesday November 3 with a days off on Friday, October 30 & Sunday, November 1.    
Dress rehearsals (final rehearsals before opening night): Wednesday November 4 and Thursday, November 5

Performance Schedule: Seven total as follows (please note that there are two performances on both Saturdays):  

  • Friday, November 6 @ 7:30pm
  • Saturday, November 7 @ 3pm & 7:30pm
  • Thursday, November 12 @ 7:30pm
  • Friday, November 13 @ 7:30pm
  • Saturday, November 14 @ 3pm & 7:30pm
