F.L.Y. Girl Program Registration
Thank you for your interest in The F.L.Y. Girl Program!
The FIND Design's, F.L.Y. Girl program, empowers middle and high school girls of color by using gender-specific, culturally relevant, strength-based programming designed to provide them with a sense of ethnic pride and "connectedness". By building on their strengths, gifts, and talents, services provided promote self-awareness, cultural expression, school/community engagement, and advocacy-resulting in real-life internal and external gains. "While it is important that our girls develop a sense of confidence in their capabilities and come to accept and to love themselves, it is equally as important that black and brown girls come to see and like themselves as who they are - bearers of a rich, historical heritage, and shouldered with a unique responsibility” (Winners Sankofa Intervention, n.d.)
The four major components focus on the following:
*Promote Ethnic Identity through culturally relevant, strength and gender-based curriculum to create an appreciation for historical culture, ethnic pride, and a healthy sense of self-identity.
*Embrace Cultural Expressions through safe spaces where girls of color can feel comfortable to speak, act, and be themselves without being made to feel unwanted, unwelcome, misunderstood, or misjudged.
*Heal through Connections by promoting community "connectedness" though mentor/peer-led “Kuruka” (Swahili for FLY) healing circles and 1:1 virtual coaching with a mentor.
*Interact with School/Community by improving educational outcomes and increasing civic engagement around women and social equality.
