Clearwater Youth Empowerment Program Application
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc invites you to be a part of a unique experience this summer onboard the tall ship, Clearwater. A replica of a 19th century Hudson River sailboat, Clearwater acts as a floating environmental classroom and seeks to inspire lifelong love for the natural world. Young Women at the Helm, Young Men at the Helm and LGBTQ+Allies at the Helm specifically seeks to engage young people from throughout the Hudson Valley, from small towns to big cities, in discovering and developing new talents and abilities in an amazing, unconventional, unforgettable (and FREE!) experience.


When and Where?
-LGBTQ+Allies Youth at the Helm (“Queerwater”): July 9th - 11th, beginning and ending in Beacon, NY.
-Young Men at the Helm: August 6th - 8th, beginning and ending in Beacon, NY
-Young Women at the Helm: August 20th - 22nd, beginning and ending in Manhattan, NY.

What are we doing?
We will be involved in a wide range of activities as individuals and in groups. Activities include sail raising, fishing with a trawl net, testing and examining water quality, steering and navigating the river aboard the sloop, learning sailors’ arts, games, and relaxing on the river. Several guest speakers may be talking about community leadership, “green” careers, and the limitless opportunities open to young people today.

Who?
This program is open to 15-18 year olds.

Will we spend the night on the boat?
No. We will be on the boat from about 9:30 a.m. until about 4 p.m. each day. The nights will be spent on land at campsites (in tents). Clearwater staff will spend the night with participants at the campsites, supervising and coordinating activities. On the third day participants will depart the boat at about 4 pm.

How much does it cost?
There is no cost to participants! All expenses are covered.

Do I have to be a sailor or a scientist to go?
No! We will teach you all you need to know.
