For
many years, the Gilbert and Sullivan Marathon was a staple in the Imperial Opera and
Imperial College Operatic Society’s diary. After too long a gap, we are
thrilled to be bringing this joyous weekend back, on Saturday 29 April - Sunday 30 April at Hounslow Heath Infant School, Martindale Road, Hounslow,
TW4 7HE (less than a ten minute walk from Hounslow West Underground Station on the
Piccadilly Line).
We need singers, instrumentalists, music
directors and pianists. We also need general helpers and cooks. Sing,
cook, play in any combination throughout. Do the whole thing, or join
for specific bits.
Bring your own vocal scores (or download them onto a viewing device of choice). We will provide instrumental parts.
Whilst
the Marathon is a fantastic opportunity to have a go, please only apply
for leading roles if you’re willing to put in the time to
prepare them. To enable
the most enjoyable experience for all, it is expected that you are at
least familiar with any large roles you ask to perform. The marathon will be cast as fairly as possible, by the
organising committee. Everyone is welcome to sing in the chorus!
Soloists do, of course, sing along with the chorus (unless they’ve a
solo line… which would be tricky).
Each operetta will be stick conducted by an MD, conducting the orchestra, soloists and chorus, and accompanied by as large and diverse an orchestra as we can assemble, although each operetta will have piano accompaniment to support and fill in any gaps required. We will provide parts. Reasonable sight-reading skills will be needed.
As in previous years, this is a
charity event. On this occasion we’re supporting Mind (registered charity no. 219830). There will be collection boxes on the day and the JustGiving page is here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/g-s-marathon2023 We
suggest any donation up to £20 (but absolutely not obligatory) per
participant.
