Description of Project: The Trumbull County Creating Healthy Communities Coalition’s goal is to plan and carry out a community food security assessment to determine the current state of food security and insecurity, accessibility, and affordability within the county.

Description of Task: Volunteers will work directly in local stores where food is sold to complete a survey of availability and affordability. The survey will be conducted using a clipboard and a pencil. Each store will take between 15 minutes to 90 minutes. Volunteers will also work to seek permission from store management to complete the survey using materials provided by the project. Volunteers will also be trained to complete the study and to speak with the store manager about the program.    

Maximizing the effectiveness of Federal food assistance programs requires that sufficient quantities of healthful foods are available in the marketplace. These items must also be at prices low-income households can afford. These surveys are part of critical research that will be used for the Trumbull County Community Food Security Assessment.  

The key questions that will be answered for this task include:
• Is a variety of food available in retail stores?
• Are the available foods affordable to low-income households?

Volunteers will be asked to pick stores they are willing to survey. All surveys must be completed by March 15, 2022. Online training will be provided to volunteers on February 15 at 2:00 PM or 7:00 PM. If you cannot attend the scheduled training, someone from the team will be happy to meet with you 1:1.
