Dear NEC Members

As you will be aware, Open Labour, in conjunction with the new Fair Internal Labour Elections campaign, is calling for Labour to switch its voting system from the outdated First Past the Post, to Single Transferable Vote (STV). As outlined in our recent article in LabourList, STV would help promote a better environment in the NEC as candidates will have to compete for voters’ preferences. This will ensure members have more say over who sits on the NEC, meaning the NEC will become more accountable to the Membership. In addition to this, STV will end worry of split votes. No longer will voters have to worry that voting for 'x' will give them 'y'; they can vote in the knowledge that if their most preferred candidate is eliminated their vote can continue to count.

Our Party already uses STV for candidate selections and elections for the Party's Leader and Deputy Leader, so why don't we use it to elect our NEC? The Party's rule book doesn't even mandate NEC elections to be First Past the Post. The NEC can simply vote to change the system, or it could bring forward a rule change to conference to mandate STV for all party elections above CLP level.

This is a simple but essential change to improve the culture of the Labour Party and expand Party democracy. We the undersigned therefore call you as an NEC member to support moves to switch NEC voting system to STV.
