The first edition of the book is a 230-page history covering social and
technical details of the legacy fleet, from design to operation and
decommissioning. It is titled
Selections from Legacy Fleet: The Story of BART's Old Cars. This book covers all major events in the story of the legacy fleet.
The book’s sections include the following:
- Design mockup and lab cars
- Building BART prototype and production cars
- Off and Running - the early days
- BART's influence on transit across the world
- B Conversion program and the flat nosed C Cars
- Midlife and the new millennium, A/B refurbishment
- Sunset and Legacy
- Preservation and reuse
A second edition, produced at a later date, is based on
Selections and
will include further minutia and details on the history of the Fleet of
the Future. This will include nonrevenue equipment, detailed car
equipment lists, timetables and car utilization stats, model BART car
history, and more. This will be about 669 pages long.
This the unofficial history of the legacy fleet
– as seen and recorded through those that designed, built, operated,
maintained, rode, and preserved them. You will be hard pressed to find
any similarly detailed book on rapid transit cars anywhere.
The first edition will cost about $20. This is cheaper than the most expensive BART fare.
