WPR Mountain Safety Team Application

The Ski Patrol is excited to work with our new Mountain Safety Team to continue promoting a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests. Through increased mountain presence, and through the enforcement and education of the Skier Safety Act and the Skier Responsibility Code, we will help create and foster a safer mountain experience and promote for all our guests the idea that skiing is for everyone, and it is best experienced by following the rules created for your own enjoyment and safety.

Each day you’ll work in a team of 2 assisting the Ski Patrol. Duties may include, but are not limited to: maintaining hazard-mitigation and way-finding banners, nets, and signs in your Slow Skiing Zone, assisting with paperwork on incident scenes, helping lost children, providing traffic control during incidents, and Ski Patrol Trail Checks and Sweeps. Mostly, though, we will expect the majority of your volunteer day to be rotating through and present in your assigned Slow Skiing Zone.

Your season will start with a Pre-Season Orientation to meet your team and your patrol crew leaders, look over the schedule of available days, clarify all questions and address concerns, and to discuss Winter Park Resort happenings and MST expectations. Your first couple of days working, the Ski Patrol will help train logistics on assigned zones and how to interact with guests when skier education is needed. Each day working there will be a morning meeting with your Ski Patrol crew leaders so you are current on daily operations, Slow Skiing Zone impacts, to set expectations, and to make sure you are prepared for the day.

You’ll be provided a uniform jacket and a radio, and you will have available ski and boot storage at the Base Patrol Room or the Patrol Headquarters.

We advise that you are at least a strong intermediate skier or snowboarder, and you have knowledge of Winter Park Resort Trails.

If you are accepted to the MST Program, prepare yourself for a fun year working with the Ski Patrol, interacting with our guests, and skiing a ton. It being our inaugural season, we are so excited to see this program develop and will look for opportunities always for improvement and better integration with the Ski Patrol. Know you will be valued and we really look forward to this exciting new journey.

Scheduling will be on first-come, first-served basis, and daily coverage needs/schedule openings will be based on what terrain is open or opening, or the visitation forecast. Most weekends are available, many Mondays and Fridays, and nearly all holidays and school breaks. We expect a 20-day on-hill commitment, not including your in-person orientation.

The benefits are as described on the Winter Park Volunteer page, and will be further clarified during your interview and orientation. Please, though, reach out to jpuetz@winterparkresort.com if you have any questions.

There are limited positions for this season. If you should not have the opportunity to join us, we encourage you to apply again next season. We will review your application and look forward to speaking with you.
