STOMP TROOPERS APPLICATION
Want to be a part of a real Mardi Gras Parade? Love music, dancing, sci-fi, and making art? Want to meet new people in a safe and supported environment? The STOMP Troopers is the place for you!
MISSION
We will be building social and creative skills while preparing for participation in a mainstream mardi gras parade, the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus.
Each session will involve formal instruction in art and music, led by a teacher, with hands-on demonstrations, video tutorials, and PowerPoint Presentations. Participants will create art (including costumes, custom doubloons, throws, mini-floats, and props) and practice music with professional artists and musicians, as well as art, music and occupational therapists. We will also have unstructured break and social time during each session.
Each participant will have a one-on-one "buddy" to provide assistance, encouragement, and mentoring.
WHERE/WHEN
The program will take place at Tulane University in Boggs room 104 and the Maker Space, located on Engineering Road, on Saturdays from 12:30 am to 2:00 pm as well as a First Grace, 3401 Canal St (Mid City) on Mondays from 6pm to 7:30 PM from Jan 12 - Feb 4th. There will also be select off-site meetings, including a visit to the Music Box Village and two weeknight dress rehearsals to be held near the actual parade route. The parade itself will be held on Feb. 9th at 7:00 pm, with a private pre-party/downtime in the neighborhood starting at 5:30 pm.

PARTICIPANTS
We accept young people with autism and other exceptionalities, ages 9-25, fitting the behavior profile (see below).
COST
The cost of participation is $480 ($40 per hour for 12 hours), plus $50 to cover the cost of instruments, costumes and throws. Payment in full is due at the time of application and will not be refundable. Registration will not be considered complete until full payment is received.

Families meeting the criteria for financial need (see attached "financial eligibility criteria" document) qualify for free participation. Scholarship spaces are limited.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Tulane University’s Boggs Classroom and Maker Space are wheelchair accessible. NOLArts will provide staffing at a 2:1 ratio of participants to staff. Staff will consist of two NOLArts therapists, 1-2 trained assistants and trained volunteers from local colleges.

NOLArts welcomes family-provided aides/shadows for those needing extra support for participation. Those with children needing extensive redirection, behavioral support or physical guidance will be asked to make their own arrangements for a one-on-one assistant.

BEHAVIORAL PROFILE
Participants will be accepted without regard to social, academic, motor or communication skills. However, to ensure that all participants have a safe, positive and fully supported experience, we can only accept those who meet the following behavioral criteria:

1. Remains in a group without wandering or elopement
2. Tolerates routine frustrations without aggression (hitting, kicking, spitting, destroying property, etc.) or excessive disruption (tantrumming, screaming, cursing, defiance etc.) or can be redirected
3. Able to execute simple, clear directions and follow rules
4. Able to eat, drink and use bathroom independently

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
Participants should be singed in and dropped off at NOLArts at 12:30 pm. Participants should be signed out at 2:00 pm and picked up at NOLArts. Children cannot be dropped off until the session begins at 12:30 pm or picked up after
the session ends at 2:00 pm. A $1 per minute fee will be charged for late pick-up and is due at the time of pick up (cash, check or card accepted).

For safety reasons, children can only be picked up by authorized parties listed on intake forms. If you need to have someone else pick up your child, you must add their name to the form or send the child with a signed, written note of authorization.

DAILY NEEDS
Participants should wear “mess-up-able” clothing, as we will be painting and gluing daily. No flip-flops, no electronics (they are very distracting to others) but other preferred items from home are welcome for use during breaks. Please send your child with a water bottle and snack.
PARADE NIGHT
NOLArts volunteers and staff will walk with the participants and musicians the night of the parade. In addition, each participant will need a dedicated personal escort (i.e. a family member or friend) with whom they are familiar, who can provide assistance during the march. PLEASE NOTE that while NOLArts will be present to provide direction, the participant's family member/escort will be fully responsible for the safety and supervision of the participant throughout the parade session. The parade is two miles long and may last up to three hours.

Participants will meet 1-2 hours before the parade at a nearby home for a pre-party, during which time they can relax, eat and change into their costumes.

MEDICATION POLICY
NOLArts staff cannot dispense medication of any kind to participants.
